Creating a new experience for the MD Anderson patients

MD Anderson is known throughout the world for the highest quality of cancer care, research, academic programs and prevention services. They also oer one of the largest bone marrow and stem cell transplantations programs, as well as clinical trials to improve existing therapies. They have cross functional teams of clinical specialists who collaborate with scientists devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education and prevention.

MDACC approached Endeavour to design and develop a patient-friendly mobile application, which could act as a quick guide for patients and accompanying guest to know about the MD Anderson campus and get acquainted to the place .

The scope of the project included designing two apps for Doctors/ Sta and the patient/ guest. 

Approach

We approached the solution by focussing on the specific user groups who would be using the app. We identified the different task flows and user journeys for the identified user segments. The team researched and identified various hygiene factors in relation, to set a harmonic base in line with the industry standards. The team then carried out various brainstorming sessions focussed specific scenarios and features that could enhance the overall user experience of the solution .

This application is designed for patients, caregivers and visitors to MD Anderson's main campus location. The app connects patients to features of myMDAnderson, the online portal. To make the application user friendly, we explored on the features and information navigation that would help patients gain information that they need without any hassles. Our approach was to keep the application as simple, use standard and conventional ways of communication wherever possible and keep the user interface design fresh and light.

We introduced the feature of secure communication of patient and health care team. The patient can check appointments or request a cancellation, can view his documents, videos and personal health records. For seamless experience, we initiated new features such as easy access to application, appointment alerts, quick access to doctor’s profile, indoor navigation to clinic, audio navigation instructions and multiple map views of center.

The patient can search for contact information amongst a database of contacts, including direct dial to the health information specialists, phone directory and a form to submit your questions. The patient can gain connection into the MD Anderson’s social media accounts, where he/she can interact with the cancer center, fellow patients and caregivers. Notes creation is also an important functionality, which helps the patient to not only take notes of their health issues but also share them with the doctors concerned.

The UI design was kept simple and neat. The typography and graphical elements were designed using visual ergonomics principles to make design easy to view and understand. We used conventional iconography to maintain the standard code of communication across the application.

The Outcome

Before the nal development, we created a full working prototype for the stakeholders to understand how the actual application would function. After the prototype testing, the application went into the final development stage.

The final application design was a personalized interactive platform for patients. The application helps patients to navigate and find their way to any MD Anderson Hospital campus. The interactive menus enabled patients to quickly access the information when needed.

The application was developed in iOS and Android platforms and can be downloaded from App Store and Google Play Store.

The application got positive responses from the patients since it helped them find any information with ease.
